Lincolnshire has achieved a 3.9% ‘significant increase’ in adult sports participation in the last four years.
The results come from the latest Active People Survey published on 16th December 2010 by Sport England. They measure the number of adults aged over 16 years who participate in sport and physical activity three times per week or more.
In 2005/2006 when the Survey was initially published, Lincolnshire had 20.0% of adults participating in sport, and were ranked 29th out of 29 counties in England. This figure is now at 23.9%, and Lincolnshire is placed at a hugely impressive 10th out of 29; and the second highest performing county in the East Midlands.
Lincolnshire Sports Partnership has been working closely with Lincolnshire County Council, District Councils, School Sports Partnerships and local sports clubs and coaches to increase and sustain participation in sport. The results highlight that the work undertaken and delivered by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership and key partners has had a huge effect on sport in the county.
Each district has played a huge part in this increase nonetheless, and the table below highlights the increase for each in the last four years. The most notable increases are in West Lindsey which has increase by 5.1% and Boston which has increased by 7.3%.

Projects such as Sport Unlimited which has invested over £100,000 in sports clubs and schemes across the county in 2009/2010 alone has contributed hugely to these figures. Nearly 7000 new participants have taken part in sport and physical activity as a result of Sport Unlimited.
66 Over 45’s Physical Activity groups have been established in North Kesteven resulting in 1474 participants on a weekly basis and over £850,000 has been invested into schemes such as Exercise Referral, Fit Kids, Health Walks, the Inclusive Fitness Initiative and Free Swimming to encourage people to take part in sport and physical activity.
Janet Inman is the Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership. She is delighted with the results for Lincolnshire: “The results for Lincolnshire have been amazing. They show that by working together with our district councils, school sports partnership and other key partners, we really can make a difference to sports participation.
“My congratulations goes out to all those helping to develop and deliver sport across the county; the districts, community clubs and volunteers, and the individuals who are taking part in a wide range of activities and sports across Lincolnshire.”
