Girl’s cricket in Boston is a success

sportivate-natlotGirl’s cricket in Boston has been a success thanks to funding from Sportivate.

Lincolnshire Cricket secured £287 to enable local coaches Peter Moore and John McGarel to run a ‘Girls into Cricket’ project at Boston High School with 14 local girls attending.

The coaches took the players through drills and games to develop their skills or for some of them, who had never played before, introduce them to the game. The 14 players will now compete in the Lady Taverners County Final; an indoor competition to increase participation of teenage girls.

Rachael Dyer, Lincolnshire Cricket Board Women and Girls Development Officer, said: “Seeing 11 girls at the final sessions, after only having two girls at the first, was fantastic. The project engaged with new participants and retained their interest, and it was really pleasing to see more talented players in Lincolnshire.”

wheelchair-roundersLincolnshire Sports Partnership has been commissioned by Rounders England to develop a new Inclusive Rounders game following the success of the Wheelchair Rounders programme which was launched in February 2011.

Students from a number of special schools in Lincolnshire* will attend a Rounders England Festival in Lincoln next week, where they will try different variations of the game, pilot drills and training sessions, and trial different rules.

The project, managed by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, is the first of its kind in the country and is hoped to be rolled out nationally to other County Sports Partnerships through Rounders England.

Rachel Belcher, NGB Project Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, is managing the contract. She said: “We feel privileged to have been asked to develop a new game of Rounders; essentially a new sport, for children with all impairments. The festival is all about trying new versions of the game to see what works and what can be incorporated into the new game.”

golf1Families in Bourne are being encouraged to ‘Get into Golf’ next week during the February half term with free taster sessions at Bourne Golf Club.

Get into Golf family sessions will be held at the golf club from Monday 13th – Friday 17th February, between 9.00am and 9.00pm.

PGA Professional Darren Game is offering a free one hour session indoors, with all equipment provided by the club.

Darren said: “Golf is one of very few sports that everyone can participate in together regardless of ability, age and gender. There are not many Mums I know who want to get muddy playing rugby or football with their sons, but many Mums and Sons happily play golf together. Likewise daughters can participate with their Dads… and usually end up winning!”

Get into Golf is an initiative developed by Lincolnshire Golf Partnership and supported by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership and local golf clubs.
