Last night youngsters from across the County travelled to
Lincoln to take on Linford Christie & Darren Campbell
in a series of 60m sprints.
The youngsters from local schools, clubs, and youth groups
as far afield as Spalding & Mablethorpe joined hundreds
of others aged 10-20 at the ‘Big Race’ at Sincil
Bank.
The ‘Big Race’ organised by Lincolnshire Sports
Partnership is the grand final of the Street Athletics road
show that has been visiting towns across the County all summer.
Street Athletics is a community focused youth engagement
programme created by Olympic gold medallists Linford Christie
and Darren Campbell.
Both Christie and Campbell have a wealth of Olympic, European,
World and Commonwealth achievements. Christie winning 100m
Olympic Gold, 3x European 100m Gold, World Champion 100m Gold
and 2x Commonwealth 100m Gold. Whilst Campbell triumphed in
the 2004 Olympic 4X100m, European 4x100m, and Commonwealth
4x100m.
Last night; the ‘Big Race’ saw both boys &
girls compete in 4 age groups, u13, u15, u17, & U20. Races
took place between 5pm & 7pm & each athlete taking
part received a “Street Athletics” t-shirt and
dog tag as well as chance to meet Olympic Idols Linford Christie
& Darren Campbell.
The fastest 6 in each age group then went on to race each
other in a final heat, the three quickest competitors will
now go on to compete against youngsters from 13 other cities
at the Street Athletics national final in Manchester on September
20th.
The talented youngsters flying the flag for Lincolnshire
will compete to win a year’s kit contract with Reebok.
