Somewhere in Lincolnshire there could be a potential
Olympic athlete, and Geoff Capes- Former British &
Commonwealth Shot Put record holder is set to find you.
Last weekend in the company of Lincolnshire Sports
Partnership; Geoff Capes set down a challenge to find
someone who can shot put 20mtrs 12 cms, as putting this
distance will guarantee them a place in the 2012 Olympic
Final.
The challenge will work on two fronts through schools
and through the community. Schools will be encouraged
to organise competitions, with the best competitors
going on to a County Schools Competition, expected to
be held in the summer.
As well as the schools competition there will also
be community events in all districts to give people
a taste of throwing. There will be a lot of taster sessions
where people can come along and have a go at shot, discus,
javelin and hammer.
The scheme is part of a campaign to bring a throws
academy to the County. Whilst talented track athletes
are usually identified early, it is feared that potential
field athletes, particularly in the field disciplines
are not being recognised and developed.
Dave Carter of the Lincolnshire Sports Partnership
commented:
“There are many people out there that have no
idea they could potentially be a very good athlete,
I often see people in the streets who I think could
be good prospects for the throwing events, although
before now they have probably never thought about taking
it up or had the opportunity to take it up.”
Posters in the style of Lord Kitchener’s famous
“Your Country Needs You” First World War
poster will be going up across the County, so keep an
eye out if you feel you might just have what it takes
to be the next Geoff Capes.
