With
the fifth Annual Lincolnshire Sports Awards just around
the corner, I would like to share with you some of the
humbling nominations we received this year for sports
volunteers.
Once again the most popular category; the Partnership
was pleased to receive a staggering 50 nominations for
Sports Volunteers across the County, this was over a
quarter of all nominations received, reconfirming the
belief that volunteers really are the life, body, and
blood of sport.
The category of Sports Volunteer is always popular as
it provides one of the few opportunities to say a heartfelt
thank you to people who rarely get the recognition they
deserve and that they rarely expect. In my opinion we
are all too quick to reward the players in our clubs
with accolades such as 'player of the match.' However
we don't often recognise and reward the volunteers who
ensure the sport actually takes place
Think back; and I'm sure you too will know someone who
turns out in all weathers just to mark the lines on
a pitch, or tidy equipment away. People who commit that
much time deserve some recognition and that was what
friends, family, fellow volunteers, and club members
had given in nominating these people.

For
all of you who took part in the Great North Run last
Sunday and for those of you who like me tuned in to
watch 55,000 men, women, boys and girls pound the streets
of Newcastle. I would like to share with you some up
and coming sporting challenges that are happening a
little closer to home.
Firstly for children aged 8-16; today Lincoln Tri club
plays host to the first Lincolnshire Kids Triathlon
at the Yarborough Leisure Centre in Lincoln. Following
the success of the National Children’s Triathlon
Series ‘Kids of Steel’ organised by British
Triathlon this summer, Lincoln Tri club is organising
a fun day to introduce more children to the challenging
sport.
The Kids Triathlon also signals a new youth section
to the club which formed just five years ago. However
despite being a relatively young club, Lincoln Tri already
has over 70 members, racing across the world in distances
from sprint (400-750m swim, 20km bike, 5k run) up to
Double Ironman (7.5km swim, 350km bike, 80km run.)
The club’s early popularity is undoubtedly influenced
by the fact that Triathlon is one of the fastest growing
mass participation sports in the UK, but what makes
Triathlon so popular? Well please bare with me as I
try to provide a little explanation.

| In November 2007, the Lincolnshire Assembly
launched the ‘Big County, Big Skies, Big Future’
project where people from many different aspects of Lincolnshire
life told the Assembly how they wanted Lincolnshire to
look in the future. The five key areas are listed below:
• Boosting our economy
• Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
• Helping our communities to flourish
• Brining people and services together
• Balancing our lifestyle and our environment
Now they have produced a questionnaire to develop these
areas further. This is a simple questionnaire but appears
to cover most of the areas that we work in so it is
well worth taking 5 minutes to fill it in.
More information regarding the project is available
at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk
and click on 'A big future for Lincolnshire? You decide!'
and the questionnaire is available on www.lincolnshireassembly.com/bigideas.

Street athletics final in Manchester took
place on the 20th September. 14 athletes from the Lincolnshire
area went along to Manchester to compete against other
counties such as London, Manchester, Luton, Great Yarmouth
and many more.
All athletes who took part did exceptionally well with
Lincolnshire being represented in almost all semi finals
across the age range.
Lincolnshire was one of the noisiest teams on the day
even though we were one of the smallest teams; everyone
supported each other which made the day a huge success.
Lincolnshire Sports Partnership would like to thank
all participants and there families who came on the
day.
