What is Boccia?

Boccia is a competitive sport that is played by individuals, pairs or teams of three. Boccia is a sport for people with cerebral palsy and other loco motor disabilities. It is a Paralympic sport, played in over forty countries worldwide and is one of three Paralympic sports that have no counterpart in the Olympic program.

Boccia requires concentration, coordination, muscular control, accuracy, teamwork, cooperation & strategy. Matches are held in indoor halls, on specially marked courts.

The aim of the game is to throw leather balls, which may be coloured red or blue (decided by the spinning of a coin by the referee) as close as they can to a white target which is called a jack. The balls can be moved with hands, feet, or, if the competitor's disability is severe, with an assistive device.

At the end of each round, the referee measures the distance of the balls closest to the jack, and awards points accordingly - one point for each ball which is closer to the jack than the opponent's closest ball. The team/player with the highest number of points at the end of play is announced the winner.
