Tennis is a game played between two players (singles) or
between two teams of two players (doubles). Tennis can be
played on three types of court surfaces, with each surface
providing a difference in the speed and bounce of the ball;
this can affect the level of play of individual players. The
three most common surfaces are:
- Clay - The French Open is played on
red clay courts.
- Hard - A form of concrete ‘Plexicushion’
is used at the Australian Open, while coasted asphalt is
used at the US Open.
- Grass - Most well known at Wimbledon
A tennis match comprises a number of sets, typically three
for both men's and women's matches, the exception being at
the major events (Wimbledon and the Australian, French and
US Opens) where the men play best of five sets. Each set consists
of a number of games, which are won on a point system.
It is the aim of the partnership staff to encourage the
transition of young tennis players from school arenas and
make an easy progression into the club environment. The clubs
and coaches involved in this process are developing ever more
through continued investment in areas of training, research
and funding.
