E-mail Print PDF

Lincolnshire Sports Partnership have been commissioned to deliver the Lincolnshire Wheelchair Sports Programme, this involves 170 Manual Sports Wheelchairs and 10 Sports Powerchairs with 18 trailers to store and transport them in and 3 Coaches / Development Officers to deliver the programme.

The primary goal of the project is to increase participation in physical activity for those with a physical impairment, with related health and developmental benefits, using wheelchair sports as the medium for delivery.

The focus Sports are Wheelchair Basketball, Tennis, Badminton and Powerchair Football, the majority of the coaching will take place in mainstream schools where the project will be used to ensure that all pupils can be included in PE.  It will also be used to educate pupils in disability sport raising their awareness of people with a physical disability.

There are eight School Sports Partnerships and each partnership will have two sets of chairs, this will enable competition between schools at a local level, leading on to a County competition.  Each set of ten chairs and one trailer will stay in one school for two terms and than be moved on to the next participating school within that School Sports Partnership.

The powerchairs will be used for more concentrated coaching enabling those with more profound disabilities to take part, with g-forces exerted by the chair providing an excellent workout.

This will be a first for disability sport in Lincolnshire with the whole county participating and involving special, main stream, further education and higher education establishments. After school and external clubs will also have use of this equipment, this will ensure further opportunity and lead to adult participation.

The project aims to ensure that if there is a pupil with a physical disability within a class they can now be fully included, leading to greater self-esteem and also to be part of something that everyone else is doing.
